In Eastern Värmland you may experience angeling
in various environments; everything from fishing for
salmon, the silver of lake Vänern, to spinning
for a zander on a late summer evening, or stealing up
to a brook to catch a wild trout.
Here you find the popular angling areas Villingsberg
& Karldal and the waterway Bergslagskanalen, which
includes 16 lakes with varied fishing. Eastern Värmland
comprises seventeen fishing management areas in five
municipalities (Degerfors, Karlskoga, Kristinehamn,
Storfors and Filipstad). between them they have more
than 300 lakes and many kilometres of running waters.
The northern part is often forest and wilderness environments
and the most common fish species are pike, perch and
trout. The southern part is more interspersed with farmland
and is characterised by its richness in species. Here
you'll encounter large zander, bream, the well-known
Gullspång salmon and trout. This and much more
is what you'll find in this part of Värmland.

Pike
Pikes is the most common
fish of prey in both large and small lakes. It often
bites early in the morning or late in the evening. Pike
fishing is at its best in spring and autumn, but in
some deep and cold lakes there is good pike fishing
even in the summer. Pikes can grow large; several specimens
of around 10 kilos are caught each year. The average
weight is about 2-3 kilos. The best way of fishing for
pike is bay spinning rod or trolling. Suitable baits
are large wobblers and spoons or bait fish.
Good waters for pike are the lakes of Vänern, Skagern,
Ullvettern, Daglösen, Lungen, Malmlången
and Djuprämmen.
Perch
The fish which you will most frequently encounter when
fishing in one of the lakes in Eastern Värmland
is perch. The best way of catching it is by means of
live bait or spinning with small spinners or jigs.
Perch like warm water. Fiching is best in the summer
season. In the winter you can fich for perch from the
ice. Registered record weights are about 2 kilos.
Good perch waters are the lakes of Vänern, Ullvettern,
Daglösen, Möckeln, Skagern, St. Lungen, Lungen
and St. Horrsjön.
Zander
Like perch, zander is a warm water fish. The best way
of catching it is by rowing- or motor-boat trolling
at night, or angling with live bait such as bleak or
perch. Mediun-sized wobblers are reliable baits. Fishing
is best in the summer mounths.
Zander is excellent to eat. Specimens of 6-7 kilos are
caught each year.
Zander lakes are Möckeln, Ullvettern, St. Lungen
and Matlången, i.e the whole lake system of Bergslagskanalen.
Coarse fish
If you are interested in fishing for coarse fish such
as bream, roach, crucian carp, tench and rudd, you can
try your luck anywhere in Bergslagskanalen.
The Swedish countryside is open to everyone, but
you must treat nature kindly, and you must show respect
for both people and animals. Do not disturb - do not
destroy, is the main rule of the right of access to
private land.
You may camp for one night on land which
is not used for farming, and which lies some distance
from residential buildings.
Hunting and fishing are not included
the public access law. But you may fish with a rod
and other hand-held gear in Sweden's 5 largest lakes
and in the sea. In all other waters, a fishing permit
is re-quired. When purchasing a fishing licence, make
sure that you find out all the regulations relating
to the place where you intend to fish, such as seasonal
restrictions, catch limitations, minimun sizes, which
fishing methods and baits are allowed, etc. You must
find out the rules of the place where you want to fish!
Never leave line or hooks behind - they can be fatal
to animal
